A breath of fresh air
Many people suffer from halitosis (bad breath), but denture wearers are often more prone to this because of the bacteria that collects on the denture itself. Having a good oral hygiene routine is essential for keeping the mouth and gums healthy and the breath smelling fresh.
Wearing dentures throughout the night and incorrect cleaning are two of the main causes of bad breath. Any particles of food that are left in the mouth after eating will form a film of plaque on the dentures which is why we recommend that dentures are always cleaned after eating if possible. During the night dentures should be kept in a denture soaking solution and not allowed to dry out.
The other important thing that helps fight bacteria is wearing dentures that fit correctly. Loose fitting dentures will cause a sore mouth which can lead to infections, mouth infections can result in bad breath.
Regular visits to the dentist are still necessary for denture wearers, even if you have none of your natural teeth. The dentist will check for gum disease and make sure the dentures still fit correctly.
