Dental veneers are wafer thin laminates that cover the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. There has been a lot of publicity in the media in the last 12 months about the many celebrities who credit their winning smiles to dental veneers, because of this their popularity has grown and more and more people are taking advantage of this cosmetic dental procedure.
There are two types of veneers, composite and porcelain, but the best by far are porcelain. Apart from their appearance which is more natural and translucent, they are also a lot more durable so last a lot longer. Many people ask if porcelain veneers can get stained or become discoloured and I tell them yes, but only if you don't take care of them. Frequent smoking can cause yellow stains on the veneers, and a poor oral care routine can result in them getting damaged or stained.
Porcelain veneers usually last around fifteen years, and if properly cared for should retain their whiteness and luminescence. When they are made they are treated with a glaze which gives the veneers strength and stabilizes the colour. If the veneers get damaged and substances manage to penetrate through this glaze then the veneers can become stained.
Porcelain veneers can be used for many dental imperfections including:
·Chipped or broken teeth
·Stained or discoloured teeth
·Crooked teeth
