Denture wearers will probably be panicking after all the press recently regarding the dangers of zinc in denture adhesives. Many denture wearers use denture adhesives to give them extra confidence that their dentures won't fall out when speaking or eating. In most denture adhesives only a very small amount of zinc is used as it helps provide denture hold. Providing the user follows and uses the denture adhesive as stated on the packet the amount of zinc they would ingest from daily usage would be less than the amount found in daily multi vitamin tablets, so not harmful at all. However, problems arise when denture wearers continuously apply denture adhesive whilst trying to secure their loose dentures. In their quest for perfectly fitting dentures they will use far more adhesive than necessary and in the process will injest too much zinc which is where the problems arise.
Denture cream manufacturers have stated that their products have always been safe to use providing they are used as directed. They only become dangerous when they are abused. Some manufacturers however have begun replacing the zinc in their denture adhesives with non toxic ingredients that are just as effective.
As a professional CDT (clinical dental technician) I would advise anyone who has loose ill fitting dentures to visit a dental professional ASAP. Dentures should be made specifically to fit the individual's mouth. If there is a need to use a denture adhesive all the time then the dentures cannot be fitting correctly. Loose dentures can cause sore spots in the mouth and can lead to infections. If you have had your dentures for a while they may need replacing. Over time your bone and gum ridges can shrink or recede causing your jaws to align differently. When this happens your dentures will fit less securely.
