Who's making you smile?
Special offers, low prices and pictures of denture wearers with fantastic smiles in an advert may attract a lot of attention from people looking for new dentures but as this news report highlights, what you see isn't necessarily what you get. The man in this report had only completed an apprenticeship as a dental technician many years earlier. Because these qualifications had expired he was operating illegally and in very poor conditions. Not only was he working in an unsterile environment and putting people's health at risk but most of the dentures he made were a really bad fit.
What this story really tells us is why you should always be aware of what to look for when searching for someone to make your new dentures:
·Check they are qualified-A Clinical Dental Technician, known as a CDT is a registered Dental Care Professional. They are trained and fully qualified to offer a range of denture services direct to patients. They must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) to be able to work in the UK. Patients can be reassured by this that they are meeting the standards that the GDC set.
·Arrange a consultation at their clinic-You should always meet with the CDT and discuss in detail what you are looking for. Ask as many questions as you want and 't be afraid to outline any worries or concerns you may have.
·Speak to previous customers-Any CDT that has a good reputation will have testimonials from previous customers who will be happy to be contacted.
