Sometimes people do desperate things when in need of something urgently, new teeth for example. In 1940's America George Washington Hancock was in dire need of new teeth but had no money to pay for new dentures.
Determined to get new teeth he decided to make his own dentures by melting the handles of toothbrushes and moulding them for his mouth, this was what he used to hold the coyote teeth in place. Yes you did read that right, coyote teeth! Apparently they were easy to obtain in Eastern California.
The only way George had of fitting his dentures effectively was to mould the warm plastic directly onto his own gums. As a result most of his gum tissue was destroyed and he must have suffered terrible pain.
In 1946 the now deceased dentist Dr Dyer heard about these home-made teeth and was so fascinated he offered to make Mr Hancock some professional false teeth in exchange for the ones he'd made himself. The now famous coyote dentures as they are known can be seen inEastern California Museum in Independence, California. They are what are would call 'cringe-worthy choppers'. See them below:
