Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are false teeth that are attached to neighbouring teeth to replace a single tooth or several missing teeth. They are usually made of porcelain which is bonded to precious metal. Other non precious metals are sometimes used in the base for extra strength.

How long does it takes to fit a Dental Bridge?

Usually 3 appointments are needed when having a bridge fitted:

• At the first appointment the area where the bridge is going to be placed is numbed by the dentist with a mild anaesthetic. The teeth on either side of where the bridge will be are trimmed in preparation for the new crowns. An impression is made and the correct shade selected taking into account the natural colour of your teeth, this will be used to make the crown and bridge. At this stage a temporary bridge is fitted in order to protect the teeth and gums exposed.

• On the 2nd appointment the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is checked for size and fitted. At this stage the cement used will only be temporary, for about 2 or 3 weeks.

• You will then return where it is checked again to ensure the fit is perfect and you are comfortable with it. It is then fixed permanently.

Dental bridges do not last forever. Usually they last between 10 and 15 years but it all depends on your dental hygiene and what you eat. The better your oral care the longer they last.
