Gum Disease and Diabetes

People with Diabetes are much more likely to develop gum disease as they are more susceptible to catching infections.

Severe gum disease can also increase blood sugar levels. When a diabetic has long periods of high sugar levels they incur other diabetic complications.

There are some signs of gum disease people with Diabetes should watch out for:

  • Bad breath-Whilst a sign of gum disease bad breath if often a sign of high blood sugar so regular testing of blood sugars is essential
  • Bleeding in the mouth when brushing teeth
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Gums receding
  • Change in bite
  • Loose teeth
  • Toothache

Diabetes can cause other oral problems, not just gum disease. Thrush can affect diabetics who have high glucose levels along with dry mouth and all of the related problems that occur with it may also affect patients with diabetes.

If you have Diabetes good oral care, regular dental check-ups and managing your blood sugar well will all help to reduce the risk of developing gum disease.
