Single Tooth Implants
Single tooth dental implants are ideal for anyone missing a tooth who wants a natural looking replacement that functions like a normal tooth. In fact they are one of the most successful dental procedures carried out today.
Dental implants are small metal rods that are inserted into the jaw. After the dentist has drilled a hole in your jawbone and inserted the implant it will need time to heal, this usually takes between 3 to 6 months.
During this time there will be a process called osseointegration taking place which is where the implant fuses with the jawbone. Obviously you won’t want be toothless whilst waiting for it to heal so a temporary tooth or crown can be fitted in this period. After the healing process has taken place the wound will be opened and an abutment (connecting element) will be fixed to the implant which enables the dentist to fasten an artificial tooth to the implant.
Advantages
There are several advantages a single tooth dental implant has over other tooth replacement options.
- Looks like a natural tooth
- Functions like a natural tooth. Because the false tooth is fixed to the implant there is no risk of the tooth becoming loose and falling out. This means you can eat any food without a problem
- Neighbouring teeth are not affected as they are with a bridge
- Dental implants integrate with your jawbone. Because the implant replaces the tooth root the bone is preserved better
- Unlike dentures which have to be taken out to be cleaned a single tooth dental implant can be cleaned in the same way as your natural teeth.
