Gummy Smiles

When there is a lot of gum covering a person’s front teeth it is known as a ‘gummy smile’. Sometimes this is genetic but it can be caused by certain health conditions.

Whilst a ‘gummy smile’ isn’t a risk to a person’s health it can affect an individual emotionally. When someone does not have the confidence to smile it has a negative effect and lowers their self esteem.

Gum Contouring

Thanks to modern cosmetic dental procedures a ‘gummy smile’ can now be corrected through a treatment called ‘Gum Contouring’.

Gum contouring uses laser technology to create a brand new smile for the patient. Excess gum is trimmed away and the gum is reshaped by the dentist to create a natural look. When a laser is used to perform this surgery the healing process is a lot quicker.

Following gum contouring the gums may feel a bit tender for a few days, this is normal. We recommend using a warm saline solution to rinse the mouth and the use of a soft toothbrush during the healing process. We would advise against flossing until the gums have healed.
