Worn Teeth
When tooth enamel has worn away the teeth will be more sensitive and more at risk of decay. There are several causes of worn teeth:
- Brushing too hard or for too long
- People who wear oral jewellery such as pierced lip or tongue can wear away the tooth enamel on adjacent teeth
- Erosion which is caused by the acids in citrus fruits and many soft drinks
- Attrition - The wearing away of the tooth surface by grinding, during chewing
Worn teeth can be treated in several ways:
- Your dentist can desensitise small areas that have been eroded
- Replacement crowns are usually used for teeth that have suffered badly from erosion
- Tooth coloured filling materials can be used to repair large areas of exposed dentine by bonding the material to the worn tooth
- Porcelain veneers
