Denture Problems and Complications

Dentures should feel comfortable, fit secure and above all look natural, allowing you to chew your favorite foods after a short adjusting period (normally between 2-5 weeks). However you may have initial problems getting used to new dentures.

Here are some of the more common problems that can aoccur with new dentures;

  • Denture Pain - first time denture wearers as well as seasoned denture wearers will find themselves suffering sore gums from time to time for various reasons.
  • Loose Fitting Dentures - over time the shape of the gums may change and dentures may no longer conform to the new shape. Dentures become loose and ill-fitting and rub against the guns causing pain. 
  • Swollen gums - if dentures are ill fitting they can lead to friction against the gums and eventually swollen or bleeding gums.
  • Gagging - gagging may be due to the thick dentures or over extended dentures. Can be solved by reducing the thickness of the denture or by reducing the over extended part of the denture. Some times the gagging is because of psychological reasons like the patient cannot wear the denture. It is difficult to overcome that. In such cases palateless dentures with denture implants are recommended.
  • Increased Salivation - after dentures are first fitted the wearer may have increased salivation as the denture acts as the foreign body but this problem is only short term.

Short term relief for denture wearers

When dentures no longer fit properly it's a good idea to visit your clinical dental technician and have a new impression taken - either for new dentures or adjusting your existing dentures.

There is some short term relief such as temporary cushions, soft liners (if the gums are too sore and swollen to have new impression taken) and if necessary remove the dentures and let your gums rest.

The problems mentioned above generally occur when cheap poorer quality mass-produced dentures are fitted.
