Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are ready to wear on the same day as your remaining teeth are extracted. These can be either partial or complete dentures.
There may be a short period where your gums may be healing after extraction before you can have the final new complete or partial dentures but by having a set of immediate dentures this prevents people from having to spend any time with the embarrassment of not having any teeth.
The Process
Before your teeth are extracted by our dentist, impressions are taken by our clinical dental technician and a custom set of immediate dentures are then created. This set of dentures will be fitted once the teeth have been extracted. Immediate dentures have a softer pallet to allow the gum tissue to heal once the teeth have been taken out.
This healing process can take several months and you may need to return to the Clinical Dental Technician for a temporary denture reline. This ensures the dentures continue to fit properly. Once healing is complete, your Clinical Dental Technician will replace the immediate dentures with your new set of dentures. These will look and fit better.
For the first 24 hours, you must not remove the immediate denture. When immediate dentures are inserted, they act as almost like a plaster and will help to control the bleeding and actually cause little discomfort. Obviously some swelling will occur after your teeth are extracted and in order to keep the swelling to a minimum you can hold an ice pack to your mouth.
Getting Used to Immediate Dentures
For the first week after having immediate dentures fitted you should remove the dentures 4 or 5 times a day and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If you want to you can sleep with the dentures in, however, it is important to keep the dentures as clean as possible this will reduce the risk of you developing any complications.
After healing has completed your dentist may recommend either a relining of your existing immediate dentures or a second interim immediate denture (IID).
