How do dentures work?

If you are wondering how dentures work here is a simple explanation. Upper dentures usually stay in place by suction, but the lower denture is designed to fit the gums and muscles, making it less secure and harder to wear.

Injection moulded denture bases should help lower dentures to fit the wearer better. The Smile Centre UK uses Ivoclar Vivadent's SR Orthoplane DCL ® teeth which are specially designed to combat the problem.

How are dentures are made?

Like most people who already have, or, may be thinking about having dentures you are probably wondering how dentures are actually made and what processes are involved making a pair of hand-crafted dentures.

The Smile Centre has a denture making video which will take you through the process of making hand crafted dentures explaining in great detail the expertise and craftmanship required to make a natural looking pair of false teeth.

Will my dentures slip or move in the mouth?

As we age the jawbone will shrink and dentures will not fit as well as they did. If this happens quite soon after new dentures are fitted then you should ask your dental professional to refit them or replace the dentures for you.

Can my dentures cause any difficulty with speaking?

When dentures are first fitted many people have a problem when trying to pronounce certain words. Don’t panic this is normal. Eating and speaking with dentures might take a little practice.

You may require practice to pronouncing certain words Reading out loud and repeating troublesome words will help. A bulky or loose feeling is not uncommon, while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold your dentures in place.

What are sore spots in the mouth caused by?

Loose dentures, dentures that do not fit correctly. Other causes may be hard foods such as seeds or nuts getting under the denture, or clenching of the teeth.

Visit your dental professional and check the fit of your dentures. Ensure you remove your dentures for thorough cleaning daily.

Why don’t my dentures feel secure when I’m chewing?

If you are a new denture wearer it may take some time to get used to them so they may not feel totally secure when you first start to eat.

Try to chew foods on both sides of the mouth at the same time as this will help to prevent the dentures tipping in the mouth. Eat slowly and make sure you cut food into smaller pieces. Until you get used to your new dentures a little denture adhesive will help make them feel more secure.
